In recent weeks we have been discussing ways of increasing communication between parents, students, and teachers. It is our singular belief that success in school is afforded through close collaboration and clear communication. In order to facilitate the process of communication, we will be implementing new policies, as well as reminding you of current procedures.
First, all students have been given a homework folder today. Students will be required to write their homework for each subject in the folders. We request that parents regularly check this homework folder for work being sent home, including projects, tests, and nightly assignments. We ask that you sign this each night. We believe this will be an excellent way for students to increase their personal responsibility, as well as provide a "check" for parents and guardians.
Second, the teachers will provide parents with an end of advisory letter that outlines middle school accomplishments and explains upcoming events. We view the letter as a summative account of the advisory achievements. Likewise, the homework folder is a continuous report on classroom activity.
Finally, we encourage you to check online with the "engrade" website. Teachers continuously post point values for homework, quizzes, tests, projects, etc. If you are uncertain about the grading policy of a teacher in sixth grade or login information, you can communicate with that teacher directly.
Again, we believe that the new system for communication will build student achievement at Oyster-Adams, and reduce classroom uncertainties for parents. If you have further questions, please feel free to contact any of the middle school teachers regarding this policy using our dc.gov addresses listed in the Oyster-Adams directory or by calling the office. ALSO, remember to sign up for your parent - teacher conference time by contacting Lynne Steingass at steingass@rcn.com or 202-342-1477.
We look forward to speaking with you soon.
Sincerely, The Sixth Grade Team

Please contact Lynne Steingass at steingass@rcn.com or 202-342-1477 as soon as possible to schedule a parent-teacher conference, which will take place between November 24 and December 12. The teachers will be available every morning when school is in session from 8:10 a.m. to 8:40 a.m. and Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1:15 to 3:00 p.m. The conferences will start every 15 minutes; please provide Lynne with three day/time options.
All four 6th grade teachers (Sr. Ames - Science; Srta. Franco - Humanities/SLA; Mr. Petersen - Humanities/ELA; Ms. Redd - Math) will attend the 15 minute conferences. You should plan to arrive early for your conference. We are on a tight schedule and will not be able to meet with parents who arrive late.
The final schedule will be e-mailed or sent home with students along with their Friday Folder materials on Friday, November 22. If you need to change your conference time, please trade with another parent. If you are unable to make a conference at any of the available times, please contact Sandi Baer at sandi.baer@dc.gov or by calling the Intermediate Campus.
See attached for the schedule.
Emmanuel Mongalo Llano Partnership
The Oyster/Adams H2O For Life Club got off to a great start last this week!
With the exciting news that the McGovern Family would be traveling to Nicaragua over Thanksgiving break, our club went to work preparing and decorating letters and photographs to be delivered to our partner school Emmanuel Mongalo Llano! If any Oyster/Adams student would like to write a letter to be delivered to our friends in Nicaragua, please leave it in the offices of Oyster or Adams before Monday,, November 24th!
Querido Amigos,
Me llamo Marguerite Harris y asisto a Osyter Adams. Me deporte favorito es f?tbol. Me encanta ayudar y no puedo esperar a ayudarte. Muchas veces pienso como es la vida de otras y como puedo ayudar.
Estoy in 5 grado y tengo 10 a?os. Cuantos a?os tienes. Soy una ni?a y tengo una familia muy grande (para los americanos) de dos hermanas y un hermano.
Que haces durante el d?a? Y camino sola a la escuela, empiezo aprender y tenemos almuerzo. Luego me voy a casa y ceno.
Mejores Deseos,
Alaitz
Dear Oyster-Adams Families,
It's that time of the year again - when we ask you to open your hearts and your wallets in support of Oyster-Adams. Thank you to those families that have made their contribution already! In the next few weeks, over 50 parent volunteers will be making calls to all Oyster-Adams families, seeking support for the campaign. If you give by December 9th, you will be entered in a drawing to win a Nintendo Wii. All gifts to the Amigos de Oyster-Adams Annual Giving Campaign are important! Your family contribution helps us to leverage additional grant funding, as foundations increasingly require evidence of strong parent support when considering their grant awards. In addition, your gift helps us pay for all the "extras" that our children receive - extras that set us apart from other DCPS schools, e.g.:
Make your donation NOW by printing out the enclosed pledge card and returning it to the office of either campus or by giving online at: http://oysterbilingual.devis.com/SupportOyster/DonateOnline/
Thank you for your support! The Amigos de Oyster-Adams Annual Campaign Committee
Oyster-Adams Mission Statement
Expansion of Our School - Expansion of Our Mission
The Oyster Bilingual School has a rich history of providing more than thirty-five years of quality bilingual education to diverse populations of youth in the District of Columbia. With the expansion of our program to a full K-8 model and the new upper campus at Adams, it is appropriate to revisit our educational mission and the values that will guide it.
Redefining our mission is a community process that will incorporate ideas from teachers, parents and other stakeholders. Since we are an established school and have already developed different mission statements over the years, we will review and revise those ideas to reflect our current realities.
Come Join the LSRT and OCC in a community discussion about our Mission:
When: Wednesday November 12th, 6:30pm-8:30pm
Where: The Primary School Building
Childcare: By OCA $5.00 Pizza: $1.00 per Slice English/Spanish Translations
We are certain that defining our mission with the utmost clarity, will lay the foundation for a successful Oyster-Adams transition.
